Microbes Control You

When you change your “normal” eating pattern have you noticed that your mood changes? This is all because of MICROBES!!!!

Research has discovered a new informational pathway called the Gut-Brain Axis. This is a mostly one-way informational highway from your intestines to your brain via the vagus nerve. Over 90% of the communication through the vagus nerve is your digestive tract talking to your brain. More specifically it is the microbes in your intestines breaking down your meal or snack and then telling your brain how it should feel based on how they liked the food.

The big picture, microbes in your digestive tract are breaking down the foods you eat and then the microbes tells your brain and body how it should feel.

The digestive tract is one of the largest organ in your body per surface area. It is also responsible for 80-90% of the production of serotonin, also known as the happiness hormone. So your gut is responsible for making the hormones that makes your happy. A coincidence? I think not!

Research has found your personality is dependent on the species of microbes in your digestive tract. What’s important to note is that the foods you eat determine what microbes will be in your digestive tract. So….

Foods You Eat = Microbe Types = Personality/Mood

A research study in 2011 confirmed this finding. They took two mice with opposite personalities one social and the other hermit-like. They removed fecal matter from each of their digestive tracts and then whipping out all the microbes in their gut. Researches then took the fecal samples and put them into the opposite mouse.

The findings were incredible! The mice flip flopped personalities! The social mouse became hermit-like and the hermit-like became social.

Think about the implications this research has. If you are a person struggling with depression, anxiety, and irritability the foods you consume have a direct effect on how you feel. So changing the foods you eat will start to change how you feel.

If you are currently struggling with anxiety, depression, and irritability simple changes can have a profound impact of your future.
