Bad Person

I have been talking about the importance of wording and its impact on your relationship with food. Today I want to address a phrase that I hear WAY TOO often.

The phrase “I was so bad I had….” insert any food.

*Deep Sigh* You having a slice of pizza or cake does not make you a bad person. Now you stabbing someone in the face or kicking a puppy makes you a bad person, but by no means does eating a food morally make you bad.

When you keep saying you are “bad” what you are actually doing is shaming yourself for having a food. This can lead to food anxiety, binging, and even eating disorders.

Furthermore you keep subconsciously labeling yourself as a bad person. And in society we don’t believe that bad people deserve to be happy. So whether you know it or not you are telling yourself daily that you don’t deserve to have happiness.

To make matters more complicated food is not something you can ignore. People eat roughly three times a day not including snacks and beverage choices. If you have a negative relationship with food this means that bare minimum three times a day every day, 1095 times in a year, you will have unnecessary stress when you think about food. That is A LOT of unnecessary stress!

And as you have heard stress in now being called the silent killer.

I know its sounds harmless to joke around that you were bad for having a bowl of ice cream, but there are really much more deeper issues at stake. I encourage you to start thinking about how you talk about food and how you talk about yourself when it comes to food. Stop shaming yourself for the choices you make!
